Title: Rework (Affiliate Link)
Page count: 279 in Hardcover
Rating: 8 out of 10 (8 = Good ideas or story and well-worth the time invested.)
Who should read: Anyone working in (or hoping to work in) small and medium sized businesses and anyone thinking about starting a business.
The Punch Line: The authors have built an outstanding business in an unconventional way – this book is a collection of business lessons that give us a window into the way the authors think and run their business. At 279 pages, the book is a deceivingly fast read. Every other page is an outstanding piece of art by Mike Rohde that perfectly illustrates the concept at hand. Definitely worth the read, and it may even spark a few new ideas for your business or personal life.
Extended Thoughts and Summary:
The book consists of an introduction, 11 chapters, and a conclusion. You could consider the chapters each a collection of blog post length sub-chapters a la Seth Godin and the trend in business/self-improvement books these days. Whether you look at this as a good or bad thing, it makes the content easy to consume and digest. Add in the art work (very cartoonish) on every other page, and the format makes for an easy and enjoyable read.
Many of the concepts hit home with me, potentially because I chose to name my business Unconventional Innovations and these guys seem to think with an unconventional mindset in all that they do. They strive for simplicity, ignore the status quo, and despise the ‘typical’ workplace. They run their business with professionals across a couple of continents and many states, meeting in person only a couple of times per quarter.
Their chapter titles include First, Takedowns, Go, Progress, Productivity, Competitors, Evolution, Promotion, Hiring, Damage Control, and Culture. With every step of the way, they offer perspective – from getting a business on its feet to creating your first product, to making sure you build and grow your company intentionally.
This book is full of punch lines and thinking that will challenge the way you do business as a small or medium sized business owner. Read it as a company before a retreat or a yearly planning session and I have no doubt you might get your people thinking big, outside the box thoughts that just might change the game.
