On Wednesday I had an excellent day from a business standpoint. I had some great meetings, one of which was with one of my dearest friends and mentors. We had intriguing conversation as always, much of which was focused on Living for Monday and the big moves I’ve made to get ready to start 2012 full-steam ahead.
One of the things he said to me really hit home. It went something like this: “I think he [one of my other mentors] and I have the same view on this venture. It has nothing to do with whether we think you can do it. We have confidence in you. We just don’t know if it can be done. We’ve never seen it done. We’re excited to see if you can make it happen. But that’s what’s fun about it.”
I loved that. It said so much in such a short few words. First off, it felt good to hear someone else say they had confidence in my abilities. After all, working by myself to build a business that is unproven can be an intimidating task – one that can raise quite a bit of doubt from time to time… Aka, reassurance from friends and family is always a good thing.
Second, you might think it would be intimidating to have someone tell you they’ve never seen done what you are attempting. It makes you second-guess, doubt, and fear in some cases. But then there’s this little tingle that raises up your back and gives you the chills. It’s this feeling of excitement and potential for incredible fulfillment. It comes from imagining the world after you’ve proven your idea works and that it truly changes lives. It’s the idea that from nothing, you have this opportunity to build anything you want. Anything.
We literally live in a world where we can take our skills, use technology for leverage, and set out to change the world in our own little way. As entrepreneurs we start with a blank slate because it’s what we have. We imagine a future and we can’t bring ourselves to stop until we find out if it’s possible. We make it our purpose to find the answer. There’s not really a choice… It’s just too tempting.
Who knows what will happen… But then, that’s the fun part, right?
