So much of prestige is wrapped up in what others think. It is concentrated on our accomplishments and how they are perceived. How we rank in society… If what we do brings us prestige in the eyes of others, so be it.
What I wish for myself, my family, my friends, and all of you reading here as well is that we never allow prestige to guide our actions, but rather our sense of integrity, passion, and purpose. Perhaps that will become the new prestige, perhaps not. Either way I wish us the happiness that comes from being true to our deepest desires and dreams.
I’ve always been drawn to money. Money contributes to prestige. It allows for such a sense of comfort and carefree action. It allows for the occasional satisfying shopping spree and fun things from time to time. But I’ve learned that money can only buy me so much.
What I wish for myself, my family, my friends, and all of you reading here is to find the sense of comfort which comes from having enough money to provide for our family and keep them from worry or need. And if we are so fortunate as to acquire vast wealth that we use it to do two things: 1) Pursue those items and experiences on our bucket list which we so deserve; and 2) Change the world (However we see fit).
I don’t know where happiness comes from. But I do know I’ve experienced it in little moments in my life. Moments like this weekend when I laughed with my girlfriend and parents as we strolled through Stone Mountain Park. Moments like staying in a hotel room with my brother as fellow twenty-somethings, a rare in-person moment of enjoyable conversation here and there. And in so many other little moments, so few of which have required either prestige or money.
So today, on this Monday, I hope we all find a way to pursue our passion and provide for our families…. All the while using our skills, resources and energy to change the world in our own little way. And, whether or not we have prestige or money, I hope we can all be present when those little moments come along that define happiness for us. Because that’s what it’s all about.
What’s making you happy today?
