Below is the letter I wrote to my camper at the end of an amazing week at Camp Horizon this past week. For confidentiality purposes, I will not use his name, but instead I will use [Camper]. I hope you will find inspiration in the words, just as I found inspiration in the actions of a boy who changed my life this past week.
You may not realize it, but you have been teaching me important life lessons all week:
1) Life is good.
2) You can be anything and everything you want to be when you grow up.
3) Smiling makes everything better.
4) Hugs can be magical.
5) If I think I can… I can.
In reality, you have taught me so much more as well – there is simply not enough room on this page to list everything.
I want you to remember something: the world needs you, [Camper]. It needs you to spread love, and joy, and happiness. It needs you to smile and believe in yourself. It needs you to get back up one more time than you fall. Because when you do, you are unstoppable.
[Camper], the world needs you to do all of these things because you have the ability to chane the world – to change the life of every single person you meet. Yes, you [Camper]. Because YOU ARE AWESOME!
If ever times get tough or you think you might quit, remember passing the swim test at Camp Horizon after so much hard work. Remember inspiring morning thoughts. Remember self-esteem class with your two wonderful teachers. And remember singing your favorite camp songs with so many of your friends.
You have an encouraging and supportive family at Camp Horizon, and we love you with our entire hearts.
You are awesome [Camper], and don’t you ever forget that.
[More to come throughout the week on how Camp Horizon has changed my life and why I hope everyone will have a similar opportunity to get back to what they truly believe in. In the mean time, feel free to learn more about camp at http://www.camphorizon.net/]
