I have one of those jobs that makes people stop and say, ‘Wow, doesn’t get much better than that right out of school.’ Many people have this job. You know, the one they wanted more than anything when they were going through the job search process.
I’ve got news for you – it doesn’t matter how bad you want a job or what people say about it…. Sometimes the work will be boring. Often times the work will be hard. And I hardly believe that the work will ever be easy. It won’t be exactly what you thought it will be. It won’t excite you every minute of every day. You’ll get frustrated because you don’t know everything you need to know. You will feel like you don’t have the support you need. You will be challenged.
And it will be ok. Because just when you feel like you want to quit and instead you keep pushing, you keep trying, you keep learning, and you don’t give up, you will have a break through. It will make your day a success. It will make you feel accomplished. And it will prove that you’ve learned something.
Work is hard. That’s why we get paid. We start at the bottom of the ladder because it is the best way to learn… And somebody’s got to do it.
I say all of this because I am experiencing it. I don’t love the work I do every day. I am particularly unhappy on days when I am waiting for somebody else to get back to me or I am stuck in the mud.
The trick is this: ultimately, it’s not about your small piece of the pie on Monday, the 28th of March. It’s not about how hard the work is today. It’s about the big picture. It’s about building a career and contributing to the reputation of your employer. It is about creating ways to be creative, to get engaged, to innovate, and to be passionate. Because those opportunities don’t present themselves on a silver platter. All of that prestige you hear about – it is the brand of the company, it is the training you receive, it is the quality work that gets done. It is not the day to day tasks.
What I am trying to say is this: Your work is not your job. Your job is to create value. The task at hand is a means to serving the client or building the business. The organization is bigger than you. Sometimes much bigger. And your JOB is to find a way to be unique and to create a well-known personal brand based on your values and passions.
Because when you do that, it becomes bigger than the work. It allows you to create happiness and to ignite your passion. It allows you to find the holes that need to be filled, the leaks that need to be sealed, and then to improve the process.
Maybe this is a pep talk for myself. Maybe it is a pep talk that will serve you well in the future. Either way, remember one thing: the work will be hard. It will wear you down. So what will you do to fight back? How will you CREATE the job that you want?
It starts with the work. It continues with you pushing for more, paving the way, and not succumbing to the notion that it is not worth it. It is.
