Learning through travel is exponentially better than learning in the classroom. This past Spring I had the opportunity to study abroad in Oxford, England at the University of Oxford. Wow, how it opened my eyes to the world. Travel is intimidating, it appears to require far too much planning to be worth it, language barriers can be obstructive, and the overall idea of being in a foreign place is just disconcerting.
Until you actually get there.
I cannot even begin to express the amount of learning and self-discovery that took place while I was away from home in a foreign place, surrounded by people with funny accents (I suppose I was really the one with the accent).
Travelling takes you away from the worries and to-do lists of everyday life and allows you to open your eyes to a world of beauty and wonder. You find that less is more, and the things that you love may not be the things that you do everyday.
I hope that I have the opportunity to continue to explore the world. I have now made it to three continents, including my homeland. Sometime in the near future I will craft a bucket list (I’ll be sure to let you in on it) and I will most definitely include visiting the 7 continents near the top.
The world is a playground, and when approached correctly money is not a barrier to travel. Set the sails and take the time to breath, discover new passions, and just take it all in on another continent. You never know what you will discover by facing the intimidation of being in a foreign place. Maybe someday that foreign place will become home.
Here’s to you on this Friday, whoever you are. I hope that this weekend brings happiness and joy to your life – no matter where you are or what you are doing.
